My WLS Journey
UPDATE July 2009
07/19/09
Well after all my great success with RNY I kind of fell off the wagon. Who am I kidding? I fell off, got back up, and ATE the whole thing...
I've gained back 117 pounds from my lowest weight of 279#. I HAVE to do something about it. I have researched various revision options and decided on the ROSE procedure. So far, the studies seem to indicate that it's a permanent pouch solution. Both my stoma and my pouch are HUGE now and have to be put back to their proper post-op size.
I am using Dr. Frank Felts. His family is all morbidly obese and he lost his dad who had a BMI over 60. He seems really motivated to helping people get their lives back. He does mainly Lap Band in his office but he's one of the few people in TX who does ROSE.
The downside is that ROSE is NOT covered by insurance. $12,000 - OUCH!
I'm actually kind of glad they are not paying for it - it'll mean I have to cough up a grand a month for the next year - that should help keep me on track - I don't want to go through all this and not be successful.
07/25/09 Well things have been pretty stressful... Friday I learned that Dr. Felts' offics still needs an EKG and lab ork from my PCP. No one ever mentioned this before and I had actually given them my last labs back when I first came in. Work is nuts! I have a big deal I am getting beaten up over the and I have a territory review due Monday. The customer has given us a Tuesday deadline which is my surgery day and I have been working on that all week so there's been no time to work on the review that is coming up Monday with my boss' boss.
The good news is that because I was so stressed I got up at 5AM Saturday and went for a walk instead or gorging on bacon and eggs like I would have a few weeks ago. I intended to walk 30 minutes. I went exploring a bit around some road construction in my neighborhood and ended up going for an hour and twenty-three minutes, covering almost 3 miles - it's been years since I've gone that far...
07/27/09 Well I went to the Surgery Center to get an EKG and have blood drawn-seems they forgot to tell me I needed that done before I could have the procedure done... It's been a bit of a crazy ride-I'll be glad when it's over tomorrow and I can get on with my life. I hoped on their scale and it says I'm down 12 # - pretty good for 12 days and no WLS yet...
07/28/09 Surgery Day
The blood work came back fine so surgery went ahead. the person before me went long so I was delayed a few hours. Afterwards my shoulder was aching-apparently they blow you up with CO2, the same as they did during the RNY, and the pain is actually from your diaphragm. I lost another 2 pounds so that was nice. After I got home I crashed in the recliner for a few hours and then had 2 calories worth of broth - that was it for the day
07/30/09 I went to the Support Group in Dallas. Nice bunch of Lap Banders who all have had pretty good results so far. I lost some more weight...
